Tuscany & Pizza

Pizza!!!

Over the years I’ve enjoyed eating pizza and now my favourite pastime is making them. I’ve collected many recipes and brought them together for this website. Some of you might be wondering what the benefits of home made pizzas are in these times when you can order pizza online. These are the 3 main benefits in my opinion:

1. Making pizza is fun!
2. Home made pizzas are healthy, the
ones from your local pizza delivery are
not.
3. You can adapt any pizza recipe to your
own taste.

OK, now lets get started. I recommend starting at the pizza dough section, then moving on to the pizza sauce section before finally taking a stroll into the pizza topping area.

What are you waiting for? It’s time to roll up those sleaves and get stuck in!!

Tuscany – Ornellaia winery –

2002 Ornellaia, Bolgheri Superiore DOC, Tenuta dell’Ornellaia

One of the great Super-Tuscan estates, Tenuta dell’Ornellaia was founded in 1981 in what has proved to be one of Italy’s most interesting and expressive wine-making areas, the maritime hills of Bolgheri within the greater wine region of Maremma. Maremma is an extremely interesting sub region of Tuscany for food and wine lovers to visit. Although for centuries it was considered unfit for vineyards, in the past few decades this coastal area has become one of the most ultra exclusive wine producing regions of Italy. Ornellaia’s 97-hectare estate stretches out along the Tyrrhenian Sea, just north of the Maremma between Leghorn and the Island of Elba, and is the birthplace of the now-iconic wines Ornellaia, Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia, Masseto and Le Volte.

Founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, brother of the powerful and esteemed Piero Antinori, Ornellaia is not one of Tuscany’s most historic wineries, but it has become one of its most respected. Its success is due both to its staunch commitment to the philosophy of “quality without compromise” and to the unique climate and terrain here. While in some ways similar to Bordeaux’s, the estate’s terroir is truly something special; ever-changing and composite, it includes marine, alluvial and volcanic soils, allowing each grape variety to be planted in its ideal type of soil. Ornellaia enjoys some famous neighbors such as Sassicaia, one of the most legendary Tuscan estates. Sassicaia is owned (not coincidentally) by Antinori’s uncle, who made the first Super Tuscan and began the trend that continues today.

The estate’s signature wine, Ornellaia Bolgheri DOC Superiore, a Cabernet-Merlot blend, first stepped onto the scene in 1985. It’s been a collector’s favorite ever since, with all bottles being sold before the wine has even been made. Less expensive and exclusive, although also intriguing and complex, are wines like Le Volte (a Sangiovese-Cabernet-Sauvignon blend).

Tenuta dell’Ornellaia actually occupies two separate estates in Tuscany’s low, hilly coastal region. The original property, which Antinori inherited, is home to a stylish, clean-lined winery and 30 hectares of vineyards. Nearby is the second estate, Bellaria, with 46 hectares. Lodovico Antinori is no longer involved with the winery he founded; in 2002, the Mondavi winery of California acquired full ownership, and in 2005 Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi took over. Today, a young and enthusiastic team manages operations.

Tuscany – Viareggio –

For a charming dinner in one of many restaurants on the Viareggio’s Passeggiata. To don’t miss!

It is known as a seaside resort as well as being the home of the famous carnival of Viareggio (dating back to 1873), and its papier-mâché floats, which (since 1925), parade along the promenade known as “Passeggiata a mare”, in the weeks preceding Easter.

Main sights:

  • Villa Orlandi
  • Villa Borbone (between Viareggio and Torre del Lago Puccini).
  • Villa Puccini, Museum.
  • Monument to the Resistance and to Peace, (largo Risorgimento). The monument is made of columns taken from the old City Hall, destroyed by the aerial bombardments of World War II, and two walls running perpendicular to each other. On one of these a mosaic from Folon can be found together with a quote from Quasimodo: “E come potevamo noi cantare con i piedi stranieri sopra il cuore?”/”And how could we sing with foreign feet trampling onto our hearts?”, 1998, Bruno Belluomini.

Spas in Tuscany

Hi my friends,

today, for the category ” things to do in Tuscany ” a great suggestion: a full day in a Tuscan spa and for sure how don’t talk to you about Grotta Giusti?… Have a look…

Grotta Giusti is one of Nature’s gifts to man.

Starting from the entrance through to the deepest part of the Grotta, three different zones are crossed, each one increasing in heat, which tradition has named Paradise, Purgatory and Hell.
Limbo has a picturesque lake, the waters of which maintain a constant temperature, both in winter and summer, of 36°C. Even the temperature of the air undergoes very little change over the seasons, ranging from 31°C. in the first cavity to a maximum 34°C. in Hell, with an approximate 100% humidity.
The atmospheric pressure is constant and the same as outside, in all parts of the Grotta. An unexplained, natural mechanism guarantees a constant and efficient change of air, making the stay in the Grotta a pleasant one, even with the profuse perspiration induced by the high level of humidity, rather than by the temperature.

The steam of the rich thermal waters generates a natural “bath of health” which detoxifies the organism for an overall sense of well-being.

“The eighth wonder of the world”, as described by Giuseppe Verdi during his frequent visits, never ceases to amaze you. The story begins in May 1849 when miners working on the property of the Giusti family discovered, quite by chance, hot steam coming out of the earth. The small opening was made larger to allow them to enter the place which had remained a secret till then: the Grotta. The sweet temperature inside the Grotta gave the owner the happy idea of turning it into a beneficial cure. Along the years the fascination and the shape of the stalactites and stalagmites, those mysterious, distorted shadows projected in the distance, whilst we move around in the heat of the mountain and the unreal silence between Heaven,Purgatory and Hell, have led us through a unique and extremely personal experience. The temperature, which increases slowly to a maximum of 34° C, creates a “thermal steam bath” which, when taken for a full 50 minutes, eliminates, along with the toxins in our body, all traces of stress. Continuous innovations have brought the wellbeing centre to its present state through ways and means, wars and armistices, smiles and tears, keeping intact the one thing where everything began….. and already towards the end of the second world war, we find traces of a project to build an outdoor thermal pool.

Isn’t it a great suggestion? For sure it will be an unforgettable day… trust me….
